Is Your Current Contact Lens Suitable for You?

Are your current contact lenses the most suitable for you and your lifestyle?
Here is a simple checklist of 5 simple things to determine if your current contact lens is a good match for you.

1 Comfort
Comfort is crucial as it may affect they way you perform. Comfort has 3 dimensions:
  • Initial comfort
- This is comfort when you first put it on
  • End-of-day comfort
- This refers to how your eyes feel with the lenses towards the end of the day
  • End-of-use comfort
- Comfort of the lenses as they are about to be replaced; this is more applicable to monthly disposable contact lenses or yearly conventional lenses as proteins, lipids and debris accumulate as part of lens wear

ComfortA good pair of lenses should feel good when you first put them on, towards the end of the day, and even towards the end of its use. If your eyes feel discomfort towards the end of day, maybe due to dryness, you could consider switching to lenses that are built for more lasting end of day wear, like daily disposable contact lenses. If the end of use comfort reduces for you in your monthly or yearly conventional lenses, you could try a Bi-weekly disposable lens, as there will be less dirt accumulated.

Your eyes must always feel good when it come to lens wear. Do not tolerate uncomfortable lenses, as it may be a sign of changes in your eyes.

3 Eye Health

There are 3 simple ways to determine your eye health in wearing contact lenses:

  • Look Good – Your eyes are white and not swollen
  • Feel Good – There is no discomfort like itching or pain
  • See Good – Your vision is sharp and clear

All 3 of the “Goods” should be present when wearing contact lenses. Generally, there are a few ways to achieve top eye health:

Shorter is better

The more often you replace the lenses the healthier it is for your eyes. This greatly reduces the risk of changes to the eye due to long term accumulation of deposits like dirt, lipids and protein

UV protectionUV protection

Extended exposure to the same harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that affect skin can also increase the risk of developing eye disorders. As sunglasses with UV-blocking lenses only block about 50% of UV radiation because sunlight also enters the eye from above, below and around them, you should wear UV-blocking contact lenses to provide added protection as they effectively block out sunlight that may enter from the top, bottom or side of sunglasses.

4 Vision
Vision relates to how well you can see with contact lenses. If your vision is not clear, there could be a few possibilities:

  • Change in vision correction needs
You may be wearing a contact lens corrected only for near-sightedness (Myopia), but you may have uncorrected astigmatism, thus your vision may be blurred even with your lenses on.
  • Change in contact lens quality
Proteins, lipids and debris accumulate as part of lens wear, and they may sometimes contribute to poor vision. Make sure that your lenses are not worn past the recommended wearing schedule and ensure that they follow a good cleaning regimen.

It is important to go to your eye care professional for an eye-check up every 6 months to ensure that your vision is not affect by other causes.
5 Technology
Generally, disposable contact lenses are a major advancement over conventional contact lenses, both in manufacturing and product quality. Its continuous innovations aim to always provide the best quality lenses.

One of the latest technological innovations in the contact lens world is contact lenses made of Silicone Hydrogels. Silicone hydrogels are extremely permeable contact lenses, which can transmit unprecedented amounts of oxygen to the cornea.

TechnologySilicone is oxygen-permeable so Silicone Hydrogel has the dual advantage of using both water and silicone content to transmit oxygen to the eye.

When you see better, you perform better. A good pair of contact lenses can really enhance your daily performance, so make sure your current contact lenses is right for you!
