WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?
Glaucoma is a group of related eye disorders that can damage nerves in your eye when there is too much fluid pressure inside your eye. If you ignore it or go untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness, so it’s important to get regular eye exams to check for it. Glaucoma is much more common in older people and those with a family history of it.
Causes
Your eye constantly produces a watery fluid called aqueous humor (no joke!). When that fluid doesn't drain properly, pressure inside your eye builds up and puts pressure on the optic nerves. The two major categories of glaucoma are open-angle glaucoma and narrow-angle glaucoma. There are several subcategories of both, which your eye care professional can diagnose and treat.
EFFECTS
You may not experience any symptoms at first, so it’s important to get regular eye exams to check for glaucoma. It often goes undetected until the optic nerve damage is irreversible, sometimes leading to permanent vision loss.
ACUVUE® SOLUTIONS
Initially, your eye care professional might have you try medicated eye drops. If those are unsuccessful, other treatments include surgery, lasers, or medication, depending on the severity.
